Before you read this article, you will need to know the following terms and definitions:
| Game(-s): | Noun. Singular or Plural. A standalone version of Settlers of Catan, which can be played right out of the box without making additional purchases. There is only one standalone (base) game of Catan. |
| Expansion(-s): | Noun. Singular or Plural. An Catan game that cannot be played by itself. It must be used in conjunction with a standalone (base) game. The 5 & 6-player expansions are a good example of this. |
| Scenario(-s): | Noun. Singular or Plural. A small set of playing pieces and instructions that can be added to normal Catan gameplay. It cannot be played by itself--it must be used in conjunction with a standalone (base) game. The "Oil Springs" scenario is a good example of this. |
| Variant(-s): | Noun. Singular or Plural. A set of instructions for using the pieces from a Catan game or expansion in a new way. Most variants are fan-generated and require printing and cutting out new pieces. |
There are many different Award Tiles. Here is a list of the ones you may encounter in your game of Catan:
- Largest Army Award Tile
- Longest Road Award Tile (Now renamed "Longest Trade Route Award" Tile)
- Longest Turn Award Tile
- Harbormaster Award Tile
- Greatest Sea Robber Nemesis Award Tile
- Richest Settler Award Tile
- Poor Settler Award Tile(s)
- Best Fisher Victory Point Award Tile; Place this award tile next to the “Fish for Catan” Mission Tracker Tile.
- Greatest Pirate Scourge Award Tile; Place this award tile next to the “Pirate Lairs” Mission Tracker tile.
- Best Spice Merchant Award Tile; Place this award tile next to the “Spice for Catan” Mission Tracker Tile.
- Greatest Explorer Award Tile; Place this award tile next to the “Greatest Explorer” Mission Track built into the game board frame.
Place each of the Award Tiles spread out next to the game board, but not overlapping.
Place one (1) face-down crop trust event token each (seed vial side up) on top of the following special victory point cards:
- Largest Army Award Tile
- Longest Trade Route Award Tile
- Harbormaster Award Tile
